Chickenburger set to spread its wings off Spring Garden

A new Chickenburger restaurant is coming to roost off Spring Garden Road next year.

Owner Mickey MacDonald plans to build HRM’s second Chickenburger near the corner of Queen and Spring Garden, just behind the Starbucks building.

The original Chickenburger in Bedford was opened in 1940 by the Innes Family and claims to be the oldest drive-in restaurant in Canada. It’s become an iconic spot by maintaining its 50s/60s style complete with a jukebox and glass pop bottles.

“I don’t think it could ever duplicate exactly what the Chickenburger is on the Bedford Highway. But it will be as similar as possible and the main thing is the quality of the food and the staff,” MacDonald said.

He had owned the existing Queen Street property for the past couple years, but a burst pipe and subsequent flood meant the building had to be demolished. MacDonald said when it came building something new, “Chickenburger was first on my mind.”

Development is still early in the design stage, but MacDonald said construction is scheduled to start in the spring, with the restaurant hopefully opening in the fall.

“I’m hoping that people like our concept there and that they’ll come to it. It’s all about the experience,” he said.
