Children’s doc found dead after charges

The former Children’s Hospital pediatrician and Harvard professor who is accused of sexually molesting his young patients died Thursday in North Carolina where he lived.

It is still not known how Dr. Melvin Levine, 71, died.

His lawyer announced his death Friday, but would not comment on a cause. A funeral service is planned for Wednesday in Brookline. His obituary information did not include a cause.

Levine’s death came the same day Boston attorney Carmen Durso filed a class-action lawsuit claiming that Levine molested at least five patients and potentially thousands more during his time at Children’s.

Durso said yesterday that his clients wished him to pursue the lawsuit, which will now focus on Levine’s estate. Durso also said that since the news of the latest lawsuit, 10 more alleged victims have contacted him.

The New York Times named Levine one of the most prominent voices in the field of learning disabilities.
