New Jersey decided against giving Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine a second term yesterday.
Republican challenger Chris Christie, a former U.S. Attorney, defeated Corzine in the heated battle,
The Associated Press reported.
The decision of New Jersey voters — faced with public corruption scandals and mounting taxes — was seen as a test for President Barack Obama, who stumped heavily for Corzine. Christie was championed in a Morristown appearance — unconnected to his campaign — by Republican Joe Wilson, the South Carolina senator who shouted “You lie!” as Obama addressed Congress.
Christie, a former federal prosecutor, had criticized Corzine, a former CEO of Goldman Sachs, for failing to rein in taxes.
