City blocks: Bunker Hill and Medford streets, Charlestown

Sitting on the porch of his Medford Street home, Kenneth Awbrey, 83, seemingly knows everyone that passes by. Firefighters returning from a call to the nearby station throw Awbrey a wave.

“This woman, she’s heading down there to where she works. She’s a nice girl,” he said before he offered a “Good morning. How are you?” to the woman walking past his home.

This neighborhood of Boston may have been portrayed as a rough place in Ben Affleck’s new movie “The Town.” However, this residential corner of Charlestown is a friendly and neighborly place, if the view from Awbrey’s porch is any indication.

“It’s a nice neighborhood,” said Awbrey, a World War II Navy veteran. “The people always help each other.”

The neighborhood, which is in the shadow of the iconic Schrafft’s building, also has an artistic side. “This is really a part of Charlestown that people can come and gather in different ways … and enjoy the neighborhood,” said Jennifer Johnson, a resident and co-director of the nearby Charlestown Working Theater.
