City getting back on board with free buses

Only the O-Train is running, but once limited service returns, buses will be free until Feb. 13 and on weekends for the rest of the month.

After that, transit users can use their December passes, or purchase a discounted February pass.

More details on how the city intends to get people back on the buses will be revealed at the city’s transit committee meeting on Wednesday.

More information on when full service will resume is also expected at the meeting, but next Monday, only the Transitway, major city routes and school buses will be running. Full service is not expected back for several months.

On Saturday, 95 per cent of striking OC Transpo employees voted in favour of the agreement last Thursday to send all unresolved contract issues to binding arbitration, thus officially ending the strike.

City council had unanimously ratified the agreement at a special council meeting on Friday.

Following that vote, Mayor Larry O’Brien urged transit riders not to take their frustrations out on drivers.

“It is now a time to heal. It is time for the union to come back and work with management. It is time to move forward,” he said.
