City hall celebrates clean and green with awards

City hall was buzzing with activity in celebration of Clean Air Day and National Environment Week yesterday.

Along with information booths about Clean Air Day and a youth air quality and health program called EnviroBLAST on hand, the City of Edmonton also announced the winners of the Charles Labatiuk Awards for Environmental Excellence.

“This is the second year we are presenting these awards, and we’re very impressed with the quality of the nominees,” said Harvey Crone, program manager in the deputy city manager’s office. “We received 25 nominations for the awards this year, so you can imagine how difficult it was to narrow the field.”

The award finalists are all City of Edmonton employees, and were split into three categories: Leadership, innovation and continual improvement.

Wendy Laskosky of the drainage branch took home the leadership award, Carmen Linman of community facility services received the innovation award, and both Greg Sorenson and Don Tymchak from fleet services won the continual improvement award.

“Everyone who was nominated should be proud of their accomplishments, and we are certainly proud of them,” Crone said.

The award was named in honour of the late Charles Labatiuk, who was an avid environmentalist, and long-time employee of the City of Edmonton.

EnviroBLAST participants also received awards for their participation in the day’s events for clean air day, and their air-quality education initiatives.

“Right after (the Charles Labatiuk Awards), we’re presenting our awards for the students” said Monica Chahal, health initiatives manager for the Lung Association. “So they are all going to go on stage and talk about their projects, and then they’re also going to receive plaques mimicking what the adults are doing.
