City helps volunteers connect via website

The City of Edmonton is making it easier to find volunteer opportunities.

Through www.edmonton.ca/volunteers, residents can view volunteer opportunities with the city that match their skills, availability and interests.

“This will help us attract highly skilled people who want to give
back to the community,” said Susan Kankkunen. “Volunteering with the
City gives everyone the chance to make a difference, meet new people,
build new skills, enhance their resume, and most importantly, have fun.”

Community Services Department general manager, Linda Cochrane, says
encouraging more volunteers helps keep neighbourhoods connected and
instills a sense of pride in residents.

“Great volunteers build a great city,” said Cochrane. “There are
so many examples of programs that demonstrate the caring nature of our
residents in a place where people are willing to volunteer their time
to help create a connected community.”

One of the volunteer programs celebrated at the recognition event
was the Snow Angels program. The program allows the city to encourage
and recognize residents who adopted the sidewalk of a senior and kept
it free of ice and snow.

More than 80 per cent of volunteer opportunities available at the city are short-term. Last year, more than 12,000 volunteers contributed
195,000 hours of service in Edmonton.
