City honours driver who saved 3 lives

An OC Transpo driver who rescued three people from a burning apartment building was humble yesterday as he accepted a commendation for heroism at Ottawa City Hall.

“I was really just a small piece of the puzzle. Other people stepped up to help too and I’m just glad there were no injuries,” said Peter Paquette, a 15-year veteran of OC Transpo and a former member of the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department.

Mayor Jim Watson presented the Route 5 driver with a gift and a certificate of recognition for his quick actions.

Paquette noticed a building in flames at 160 Lavergne St. as he was driving his route Dec. 9.

Making sure to park his bus and passengers out of the wind and smoke, Paquette radioed for help and then charged into the building.

Running up to the third floor, he kicked open a door and saved three tenants.
