A city building-regulations officer is frustrated with another incident involving falling debris on Saturday and says the problem is entirely preventable.
Crews were called out Saturday evening when a piece of scaffolding fell from the 19th floor of a construction site in the 200 block of 9th Avenue SW onto a parkade ramp.
Marco Civitarese, City of Calgary operational supervisor for building regulations, said they have issued a stop-work notice at the site and added it was lucky nobody was hurt.
“It’s definitely concerning. It’s frustrating that these are preventable and it is the responsibility of the building owners to meet the safety and regulation codes,” he said.
“They’ve been told they need to meet the requirements. It’s a matter of responsibility and it’s getting to the point of frustration.”
Just last week, three companies were charged with safety violations in relation to the death of a three-year-old girl in August, who was killed by falling construction debris.
Civitarese said Alberta Occupational Health and Safety will also be reviewing the incident, but in the meantime the work site has been closed down.
