Just two days after a grisly Bronx bus crash killed 15 people, two more travelers were killed in another accident involving a Chinatown bus.
The vehicle was headed to Philadelphia Monday night, but it careened off the New Jersey Turnpike, hitting an overpass support and an embankment.
Two people died — including driver Wei Wang, 50, of Forest Hills — and five others were seriously injured.
Police are investigating the collision, while still trying to understand what caused Saturday’s crash.
They interviewed driver Ophadel Williams yesterday. Williams’ criminal background includes a suspended license and two criminal convictions — one for a 1990 deadly stabbing and another for stealing $83,905 from the Police Athletic League. He served years in prison for both charges.
Williams told cops he lost control of the bus after a truck sideswiped him. The police confiscated a tractor-trailer.
“Saturday morning’s crash was a heartbreaking tragedy and requires us to look closely at the safety regulations in place for the discount tour bus industry,” Sen. Charles E. Schumer said.
Schumer and Rep. Nydia Velazquez said the crashes should be a wake-up call to investigate the industry’s safety procedures.
