City puts cap on bottled water ban

A city committee has put a cork in plans to ban water bottles from city facilities.

In a 7-3 vote, the city’s intergovernmental affairs committee Thursday dunked plans to follow other Canadian cities already looking to stop selling bottled water in an effort to promote recycling and water conservation.

While the motion will still go before city council later this month, the overwhelming decision makes it unlikely the ban will come into effect.

Calgary’s existing contract with Coca-Cola, which provides bottled water in addition to other beverages, expires in 2012.

Ald. Joe Ceci who made the pitch to phase out the plastic bottles as contracts with providers expired said the decision shows council is not ready to be an environmental leader.

“It looks like the opportunity for leadership for a committee of council has been missed,” he said.
