Ottawa’s great stadium debate will move into high gear when city staff releases evaluations on two unsolicited stadium proposals Monday.
The joint meeting of the city’s planning and corporate services committees will hear city staff’s recommendations regarding proposals to build a new football stadium in the Glebe or soccer stadium beside Scotiabank Place in Kanata.
The Ottawa Sport and Entertainment Group, lead by Ottawa 67’s owner Jeff Hunt, is proposing a massive redevelopment at Lansdowne Park that will include a rebuilt 25,000-seat stadium to host a Canadian Football League franchise.
The $120-million plan includes a hotel, commercial and residential developments, and a walk-through aquarium housed in the Aberdeen Pavilion.
That proposal is competing with Senators Sports and Entertainment, lead by owner Eugene Melnyk, who is proposing a 20,000- to 30,000-seat stadium in Kanata that would host a Major League Soccer franchise, a 400-room hotel and commercial and residential developments.
Residents will have an opportunity to comment at a joint committee meeting on April 20. Council is expected to vote on the recommendations during its April 22 meeting.
