City’s ‘risks with theatre’ pay off for Fringe fest

The 13th annual Ottawa Fringe Festival yesterday wrapped up after 10 days of freewheeling theatre, packing audiences into 57 acts in 13 venues.

Fringe general manager Natalie Joy Quesnel said yesterday that audiences topped last year’s 12,000 attendees and organizers were still hoping to reach their goal for this year of 13,000.

“Everyone saw a general increase in their ticket sales so it would seem that Ottawa is just branching out and really wanting to experiment and take risks with theatre,” she said.

Winners of the Fringe Awards announced last night included: Outstanding Comedy — Like a Virgin (Jimmy Hogg); Outstanding Drama — Spiral Dive: Episode One (Theatre REpublic); and Outstanding Solo Performance — The Accident (Jonno Katz— Epicworlds).

The Spirit of the Fringe Award was this year renamed the Steve Sauve Spirit of the Fringe Award, in memory of a dedicated longtime volunteer who passed away this year. It went to Ross May, a former Fringe executive producer.
