The Mike Danton era begins tonight for the Saint Mary’s Huskies.
The 29-year-old former NHLer who was recently released from prison in a murder-for-hire plot will play his first game in six years when the Huskies host the Acadia Axemen in Atlantic University Sport action at the Forum at 7 p.m.
After just four practices, he will step in on the second line with Cam Fergus and Justin Munden. But if you expect him to fill the net with pucks, you might be disappointed.
“He knows he’s not in game shape … He knows he’s going to bobble pucks,” Huskies head coach Trevor Stienburg said. “He wants to be a reason why we win, but he also knows that if he wants to be an effective part of this program when it counts, he has to get in now and take his lumps.”
Danton, who had 14 points and 182 penalty minutes in 87 NHL games, was released from prison in September after serving five years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder.
Even Stienburg doesn’t know what to expect.
“I’m going to do just like everyone else … I’m going to watch him and see how he does,” Stienburg said.
