Colin Kaepernick to Patriots after Jimmy Garoppolo trade?

Could Colin Kaepernick be the next backup QB for the New England Patriots?

The Patriots are always pegged to do something big around the NFL trade deadline but few figured they’d trade away their biggest chip before the Halloween Day 4 p.m. deadline.

Bill Belichick stunned the league Monday, shipping out backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to San Francisco in exchange for a 2018 second round NFL Draft pick. The 49ers pick has significant value around the league as it will be in the 30s – more or less first round value.

The trade immediately means that the Patriots are planning on keeping future Hall of Famer Tom Brady in Foxboro for the foreseeable future. It’s a distinct possibility now that Brady stays in a Patriots uniform until he’s 45-years-old (2022) or even older.

Brady is having an outstanding season and is a legit MVP candidate despite the team having struggled to put up points in the past four weeks. Brady has also been hammered by opposing defenses this season and the Patriots now do not have a backup quarterback on their roster.

The Pats have a bye week to sign a backup.

Colin Kaepernick is the “best available” free agent QB on the market. The timing of this whole matter is extremely interesting in that it was learned today that part of Kaepernick’s grievance against the NFL is his beef with President Donald Trump’s relationship with NFL owners, specifically Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

Adding to the drama is the speculation that the Patriots might flip the 49ers second round pick for some defensive help or a big name wide receiver. The Pats have been linked to retired wide receiver Calvin Johnson, current Colts receiver TY Hilton and current Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald in recent days.
