Comic-Con: Celebrity, stabbing and comics

Celebrities, elaborate costumes, a stabbing — it must be Comic-Con. The entertainment industry’s annual celebration of comic books and video games (as well as the films and TV shows they spawn) once again took over Downtown San Diego, filling the convention center with a frenetic, party-like atmosphere for four days straight.

But this year’s convention was briefly marred by violence when a fight broke out Saturday afternoon, halting the proceedings for an hour as sheriffs investigated. According to witnesses, two men began arguing over a seat in the hall when they came to blows. “One male attacked the other male, stabbing him on the side of his eye with a pen,” San Diego Police Sergeant Gary Mondesir said.

Comic-Con was soon back under way. “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator Joss Whedon announced he’d be directing the upcoming “Avengers” film, which unites several Marvel Comics heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America and Thor. Whedon later joined the film’s cast, including Robert Downey Jr., and new additions Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner, who will play the Hulk and Hawkeye, respectively.
