A church parking lot turned into a makeshift garbage dump and recycling depot brought community members together yesterday.
Over 125 volunteers from the Calgary East Church of the Nazarene and the Penbrooke Community Association, along with Ald. Andre Chabot and MLA Manmeet Buhllar, came out for the second annual Faith in Action Community Clean-Up. Community members pitched in to collect garbage and assist residents with yard work.
“Our intention is to connect to the community on a grassroots level,” said Buhllar. “There are people here who may not feel connected and we want to give them a sense of community development.”
Pastor Doug Webb of the Calgary East Church of the Nazarene said the cleanup is not only about removing waste and garbage: “We want to build a relationship with people and get to know our neighbors.”
Neighbours filled three large garbage bins with everything from old carpets to gasoline engines. Reusable items will be donated to causes in the Congo. Metal scraps, cardboard and electronics will be recycled.
