Condo fire causes $1M in damage

A fire suspected to have spread from a barbecue caused “extensive damage” to two units at a four-storey condo building in the city’s east end yesterday afternoon, Ottawa firefighters said.

At 2:32 p.m., 45 firefighters in 16 vehicles attended the building at 130 Briar Gate Pvt. near the intersection of Innes and Trim roads. The residence was part of a condominium that comprised seven other condos. It sustained smoke and fire damage as did another unit. The remaining units sustained water damage. Police have estimated damages at $1 million.

There were no injuries. Ottawa fire prevention officers were on scene yesterday to determine the cause of the fire, which is still under investigation.
