Cookie program bakes up ‘self-esteem’

Enabling people with disabilities is just one goal Cookies on the Go accomplishes with its work program that helps provide jobs to people with disabilities.

The Calgary Progressive Lifestyles Foundation’s cookie program gives 200 clients the opportunity to work in a fun atmosphere baking cookies, according to organization spokesperson Jaimie Dachy.

“It’s also a self-esteem boost and it’s a lot of fun for those working here. They aren’t just baking but it’s also a coffee shop so they also get to interact with customers,” Dachy said.

Dachy said the program provides people with disabilities a chance to work when they may not otherwise have the opportunity — and the hands-on experience.

Cookies on the Go’s special Christmas baskets have been so popular that already over 400 have been sold, and there is still a demand for more.

“It’s a nice alternative to the traditional wine type gifts this time of year. Everybody loves cookies.”
