Cops face assault and robbery charges in “off-duty incident”

Three off-duty police officers were arrested for assault and robbery in downtown Vancouver yesterday after an altercation with a Surrey man.

Police provided little information except to say the officers, who are from the West Vancouver, New Westminster and Delta police departments, were involved in an altercation with a 47-year-old man on Burrard Street early in the morning.

Vancouver police Const. Jana McGuiness said an ambulance was called to the scene but no one was taken to hospital.

“Crown will be asked to review any potential charges,” she said.

West Vancouver police Cpl. Fred Harding said a junior constable with the department was arrested in the “off-duty incident.”

“The criminal investigation is in the preliminary stages,” he said.

All three departments have initiated investigations into the officers’ conduct and the charges against them.

“Our members have a commendable record for providing excellence in policing,” said Delta police Const. Jim Cessford.

“The process in place demonstrates that our officers are held accountable to the community. The resolution into this matter now rests on the principles of due process,” he said.
