Cops find firearm near murder scene

Halifax Regional Police are investigating whether a firearm found near where a pizza delivery driver was shot is the weapon used to kill him.

Donald Chad Smith, a 27-year-old from Windsor Junction, was found outside of 15 Joseph Young St. in Highfield Park just before 9:30 p.m. on Saturday suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Sunday night, police say investigators recovered a firearm in the wooded area behind apartment buildings at nearby Farthington Place.

“We are not releasing any other information other than to say it was a firearm,” said police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter.

“We are currently in the process of trying to determine if the weapon was involved or connected to the homicide.”

Police are also trying to locate a red full-size SUV with chrome rims, similar to an Escalade. Police say the vehicle was seen driving around the area around the time of the shooting, with loud music on.

“At this point, we don’t know if there’s a connection with this vehicle,” Palmeter said. “It was seen driving in the area right before the shooting and it was not seen afterwards.”

Smith was delivering for Panada Pizza, where he just started on a part-time basis. He was shot outside the apartment complex before making the delivery.

Police said the order was called in from an outdoor payphone on nearby Highfield Park Drive between Joseph Young Street and Burnside Drive.

Police still don’t know the identity of the person who made the call or whether the call is connected to the case.
