An elderly Queens man was shot dead by police at his home after he held and pointed a 12-gauge shotgun at officers on Saturday morning.

Moments earlier, Jack Calvello, 86, called police and said that he shot his daughter and her pet Yorkshire terrier. He told the 911 operator that he was going to kill himself next.

An NYPD sergeant and officer arrived at the second-floor Astoria apartment at around 11:16 a.m. where they found Calvello still holding the shotgun.

The cops asked Calvello to drop the firearm from outside the house, which is across the a park on 38th Street. The elderly gunman then turned towards the officers and walked through the front door, prompting the officer to fire his gun.

Authorities said Calvello was shot once in the torso and fell back, allowing the police to find Calvello’s daughter, Carolann Matyka, alive in the kitchen with a gunshot wound to the head.

Matyka, 65, died at Elmhurst Hospital Center four hours after Calvello’s call. Her dog, which the New York Daily News reported had a laceration to the neck, was expected to survive.

Calvello was taken to and died at Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens.
