Boston police are hoping their new message aimed at combating crime sticks with people who park in the Kenmore Square and Fenway neighborhoods.

Police recently launched a sticker campaign to combat what they said was the “avoidable” crime of thefts from cars. Yellow stickers placed on parking meters display the message “Leave it and lose it” and tips to avoid theft, like not leaving valuables in plain view, not walking away from an idling car and not leaving a car unlocked.

The Boston Police Department’s District 4 includes the Back Bay, South End, Fenway and Kenmore Square areas and was the busiest district for car breaks in the entire city in 2013.Police data shows more than 54 percent of all thefts from cars in the district last year occurred in the Fenway and Kenmore Square areas.

Specifically, police urged people not to leave their cell phones, electronic devices, GPS devices, loose change, clothing, baggage and other items in plain view.

“This is a crime of opportunity,” said Boston police Sgt. Luke Taxter, in a statement. “Thieves aren’t breaking into random cars. People are leaving valuables in plain view within their cars and becoming victimized.”
