For the first time in Nova Scotia’s history, the gay pride flag was raised at Province House yesterday.
About a hundred people showed up for the raising of the rainbow-patterned flag, one of the first kickoff events for the 23rd Pride week in Halifax.
Laura Barbour, a government employee and a member of the government’s Lesbian, Gay Bi-Sexual, Transgender, Intersex network, said the flying of the pride flag is an important step for the province.
“It’s a historical day,” said Barbour. “LGBTI people are an important part of the fabric of Nova Scotia.”
The province’s LGBTI network was created to provide inclusive and supportive work environments for LGBTI employees of Nova Scotia.
Inclusiveness
Deputy Premier Frank Corbett, along with public services commissioner Kelliann Dean, welcomed the crowd to Province House. “Today is one more step towards supporting a truly inclusive workplace. and giving all Nova Scotians the opportunity ‘free to be,’” said Corbett, with a nod to the theme of this year’s celebration.
