Corgan stands by his Smashing Pumpkins guarantee

Billy Corgan seems a little preoccupied with numbers lately.

After celebrating the Smashing Pumpkins’ 20th anniversary in 2008, his latest mission is to release 44 songs via free download at his band’s website. The tracks then become limited edition EPs and, hopefully, eventually a massive album set, too.

With the first five-song EP, Teargarden By Kaleidyscope Vol. 1/Songs For A Sailor, completed, Corgan still has 39 songs to go.

“I know, tell me about it. Sometimes I think, ‘Why didn’t I say 24? That’s still a pretty big number,’” he laughs. “I wanted to pick a number that was so substantial (but one)] that I could deal with. If I release 12 songs every year for four years, that I can do.”

Corgan also wants fans to know that the on-off-on Smashing Pumpkins aren’t about to disappear again. This year sees a brand new lineup. Joining Corgan are guitarist Jeff Schroeder (who played on the Pumpkins’ anniversary tour), bassist Nicole Fiorentino, and drummer Mike Byrne.

“Once you break up a band there’s always this, ‘Well, you know, if I get into this, are you going to do it to me again?’”?he says. “I want people to understand that I’m really committed to the band in a way I haven’t been since the mid-’90s.”
