A quick fix for Calgary commuting arteries clogged with collisions may come in the form of a standby tow truck service.
City council approved a notice of motion from Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart directing administration to come back with a report outlining the costs and logistics of having tow trucks strategically placed along high volume roadways, with the intention of quickly clearing away broken down vehicles, or those involved in collisions.
Ald. Fox-Mellway also suggested administration go back to several similar reports done as far back as eight years ago — when cost was a stumbling block to the plan’s application.
“Most of the investigation is in these reports, so I didn’t want you to go back and re-invent the wheel,” she said, noting previous council’s did not approve funding.
“As much as we think it’s a good idea, it’s big dollars to put together from a capital side, and of course the ongoing operating is close to a half-million dollars a year.”
Concern over paying for Deerfoot Trail service, a provincial jurisdiction, also raised questions in council.
A report is expected back in December.
