Council sworn in at city hall

Cheers greeted Calgary’s council members as they walked into the council chambers last night for the swearing-in ceremony.

Before administering the oath of office to her brother, Shaheen Nenshi Nathoo spoke of how proud she and her family are.

“Today is a very significant and momentous day for our family,” said Nathoo. “I’m so very proud of you and I’m so proud of Calgarians for the choice they have made.”

While the night was filled with excitement, the reality of what lies ahead quickly set in for the new mayor.

“We have in this city something that any other city would kill for and that is a deeply engaged population, and we have to make sure that we don’t abuse that,” said Nenshi.

For Ward 9 Ald. Gian-Carlo Carra, a newcomer to council, the task is a bit daunting.

“It’s amazingly exciting but it’s also sobering because I made a lot of promises and now I’m beholden to keep (them) … I’m looking forward to that but it’s a major challenge,” he said.
