Council veteran eager for ‘fresh start’

Diane Deans cannot wait to start working with her new cohorts down at Ottawa City Hall.

The veteran city councillor from Gloucester-Southgate was re-elected on Monday night and will begin serving her sixth consecutive term as the representative from the south-end ward.

“I think the combination of experienced and new councillors will be interesting and advantageous in many ways,” Deans said.

“It’s going to be very reminiscent of the amalgamation council of 2000. We jumped from the old to the new Ottawa council, changed buildings and there was a whole bunch of new faces.

Having 10 new councillors will be like a new beginning.”

Deans becomes the only city councillor to have worked with mayor-elect Jim Watson during his first term in office and is excited to meet her fellow politicians and start moving forward.

“I know the new councillors will have their own ideas but there’s a lot to learn. Hopefully they will feel free to use the veterans as mentors.”
