Residents of south Ottawa are so anxious to see a bridge finally built across the Rideau River that the area councillor is seriously considering setting up bleachers so people can watch the work.
“People are excited. They’re interested. We’re going to have to accommodate some way for people to watch the project as it happens,” said Gloucester-South Nepean Coun. Steve Desroches at a sod-turning ceremony for the Standherd-Armstrong Bridge Tuesday.
Desroches said they may look into cameras so people can keep up to date on the work.
The 143-metre-long bridge is being built on land, and will be slid into place in 2012. Desroches said he even plans to contact producers at the Discovery Channel to see they were interested in filming that.
“This is going to be an engineering feat,” said Desroches. “I don’t know if it will make it, but I know there are a lot of people who will find this very interesting.”
Along with the work to connect the bridge to roads on each side, the project will cost $105 million.
