Country Club by John Doe and The Sadies

John Doe and The Sadies
Album: Country Club
Label: Outside
Rating: *** 1/2

This is a record brimming with guilty pleasures. It’s for all those who secretly admit to loving the music of Roger Miller, Porter Wagoner, Ray Price, Hank Snow, Merle Haggard and Bobby Bare. The songs are pure countrypolitan, a style of music that took hold of Nashville in the ’60s as producers attempted to take country music uptown. The Sadies arrangements, however, have stripped the songs down to their original demo versions — glorious pedal steel the only embellishment. No strings or choral accompaniments here. And the song selections are brilliant. Instead of the obvious, like King Of The Road, they’ve taken Miller’s Husbands And Wives, instead of Stand By Your Man, they’ve taken Tammy Wynette’s Til I Get It Right. John Doe’s vocals are near perfect, especially on the Kristofferson masterpiece Help Me Make It Through The Night.
