The man and woman who jumped off the George Washington Bridge and died Monday had killed an elderly man they were living with in upstate New York, police officials said Wednesday.

The couple, Gary Crockett, 41, and Nickie Circelli, 40, were pulled from the Hudson River alive but died at a nearby hospital. They were identified by relatives on Tuesday, Port Authority Police spokesman Joe Pentangelo said.

Police believe that the couple, both of Suffern, New York, had killed Circelli’s uncle before leaping from the bridge while holding hands, local authorities told reporters on Wednesday.

Suffern police said the pair had been living with Circelli’s 70-year-old uncle, Vincent Valenti, when he discovered they were stealing from him. Cops believe the couple killed him sometime on Monday, when he’d planned to make a police report. Authorities believe he was smothered.

Crockett and Circelli left notes at Valenti’s house, some indicating plans to commit suicide, police said. According to officials, the couple took Valenti’s Chevy Malibuand drove to the George Washington Bridge.

Pentangelo said the car was not recovered from the bridge, but keys to the Malibu were found inCrockett’s pocket.
