Prosecutors in the case of George Zimmerman, who has been charged with second degree murder, insist that he started a confrontation with Trayvon Martin before shooting and killing him, according to court documents released today.
According to the probable cause affidavit, released by the Orlando Sentinel, Zimmerman “confronted Martin and a struggle ensued.” Zimmerman has told police that he did follow Martin, but Martin confronted him, forcing Zimmerman to use his firearm against him in self-defense.
The affidavit also said that during the 911 call Zimmerman placed before the shooting, he “made reference to people he felt had committed and gotten away with break-ins in his neighborhood.”
The document goes on to state, “Martin was on the phone with a friend and described to her what was happening. The witness advised that Martin was scared because he was being followed through the complex by an unknown male and didn’t know why.”
Martin began to run home, but “Zimmerman got out of his vehicle and followed Martin,” according to the affidavit.
At Zimmerman’s first appearance in court today, he barely spoke. His new attorney, Mark O’Mara, did not request bail. Instead, he told reporters he would try the request in a couple weeks. Zimmerman’s formal arraignment has been set for May 29.
