Credit city on lead water test: Expert

An expert on drinking water says Toronto deserves praise for specifically testing older homes for lead, even if the results are troubling.

Provincially mandated testing of 100 homes last summer and fall found more than half exceeded the acceptable level of lead in drinking water “Credit Toronto for not being afraid to take a look at these homes,’’ said Robert Andrews, of the University of Toronto’s civil engineering department. “That way you can notify those homeowners about replacing their lead service lines and take other positive steps.”

Toronto found 52 homes were above the safe level of lead for drinking water.
