A female Somerville school teacher was arrested Wednesday for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old.

Alexandra Romanos, 41, Stoneham, pleaded not guilty during her arraignment Wednesday to charges of aggravated rape of a child and indecent assault and battery on a child, according to the Middlesex district attorney’s office. She was ordered held on $50,000 bail.

School officials were made aware of the inappropriate relationship by a parent who reported it at the end of June, officials said. During an investigation by authorities, it was discovered that Romanos, a teacher at East Somerville Community School, allegedly initiated a sexual relationship with the teen. The relationship took place on and off school grounds, authorities said.

Romanos has been placed on administrative leave from the school.

“The safety and well-being of our students is always our highest priority, so it is all the more disturbing that a teacher — the very individual most entrusted to ensure that safety on a daily basis — has allegedly blatantly violated that trust,” Mayor Joseph Curtatone said in a statement. “I commend the parent who took the right step in reporting this to school officials, and I commend and thank the District Attorney’s Office and the Somerville Police for their swift and thorough investigation. We will continue to cooperate with the D.A.’s investigation in any way needed.”

According to Romanos’ LinkedIn profile, she has worked for Somerville schools of more than six years and was a fifth grade teacher.

Calls placed to numbers listed for Romanos’ home went unanswered. It wasn’t immediately clear who represented her in court.
