Dalhousie fire closes 4 buildings

A late night structural fire at Dalhousie University shut down several of the school’s buildings over the weekend.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Services were called to the Life Sciences Centre at Dalhousie just before 11 p.m. on Saturday, after receiving reports of a fire in the building’s biology tower.

According to Dalhousie spokesman Charles Crosby, the fire was quickly contained.

“(The fire) appears to begun on the roof … and it seems to have melted a metal panel and the smoke got in to the eighth floor of the tower that way,” he said.

Crosby said the bulk of the damage to the building was from water, after the sprinkler system kicked in.

An exact cause hasn’t been determined.
