Dartmouth’s Michelle Russell came away with Nova Scotia’s best finish at the junior world sprint canoe-kayak championships in Moscow on the weekend.
Russell finished eighth in the A Finals for the K-1 and K-4 500-metre events on Sunday, adding to Saturday’s 10th-place finish courtesy of a win in the K-1 1,000 B Final.
“It went pretty well,” said Russell of the K-1 500. “I had a great start but the rest of the race didn’t unfold as planned. At the halfway mark the leaders pulled away. It was my first world juniors and I was happy to get this experience.”
Kentville’s Alexa Irvin was also part of the K-4 500 crew.
Mark James, also from Dartmouth, was another highlight among Nova Scotia’s results, placing ninth in the C-1 1,000 on Saturday. He had placed 18th at the same event in 2007.
“It was a big step for me to make the final,” said James. “I had a very tough field in my semifinal and I wasn’t too sure how it was going to play out but I stuck to my race plan.”
In other A Final action, Dartmouth’s Adam Tenwolde was part of Canada’s ninth-place K- 1,000 crew.
