David Beckham is used to losing in the World Cup, after all he did play for England.

But the retired soccer player got to experience losing as a fan in Sunday’s World Cup final as he took along his three sons — Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz — to root for Argentina.

You probably know by now that Argentina lost to Germany, 1-0, in extra time on a goal in the 113th minute by Mario Gotze. As you can see in the photo above, the Beckham crew was very disappointed.

We’re not quite sure why they were rooting for Lionel Messi and Argentina. Messi has played for Barcelona his entire career (2004 to present), while Beckham spent 2003 to 2007 with Barcelona’s main rival, Real Madrid. Maybe he just has an appreciation for his former enemy.

Or he just couldn’t root for Germany, because really, who roots for Germany other than Germans?

Beckham appeared in three World Cups for England (1998, 2002, 2006). He made it to the quarterfinals twice, but never further.

It was apparently his sons’ first trip to a World Cup final, as Beckham wrote on his Facebook page. His eldest son, Brooklyn, is looking much older than we remember. He better be out on the pitch soon.

At least they weren’t rooting for England though, right?
