If the Web traffic is any indication, fans of David Bowie felt the most appropriate way to mourn the rock legend’s passing was to head to YouTube and soak in his career highlights. In the day following the announcement that he’d died Sunday at the age of 69, Bowie racked up 51 million views on Vevo, the highest for any single artist in a 24-hour period, according to the video service. It’s a record previously held — and recently won — by Adele, who pulled in 36 million views in a day when “Hello” was released.

And it wasn’t just classic tracks and moments fans were clamoring for. “Lazarus,”Bowie’s final music video and the first single off his “Blackstar” album, was the most-watched video of the day, with a staggering 11.1 million views.”Look up here,I’m in heaven.I’ve got scars that can’t be seen,” he sings in the video. “This way or no way, you know, I’ll be free.”
