Terry Francona is unemployed. Theo Epstein is basically a Cub.
But neither of those Red Sox departures hurt as much as one that’s being heavily hinted at: David Ortiz to the Yankees.
Ortiz is aging, but he’s still one of the best pure DHs in the game. And he’s going to be a free agent.
The Yankees have a need at the position, with Jorge Posada likely to retire. They have loads of cash — and worse, they appear to have Ortiz’s respect.
“That’s something I gotta think about,” he told ESPN. “I’ve been here on the Red Sox a long time, and I’ve seen how everything goes down between these two ballclubs. [The situation in New York is] great from what I hear. It’s a good situation to be involved in. Who doesn’t want to be involved in a great situation where everything goes the right way?”
Meanwhile, Ortiz said Boston has “too much drama.”
Uh oh.
