With less than two weeks left until Primary Day, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio holds a large lead over his Democratic rivals.
According to the latest poll by The New York Times/Siena College, de Blasio has the support of 32 percent of likely Democratic voters. Bill Thompson comes in second place with 18 percent of support, followed by Christine Quinn with 17 percent, Anthony Weiner with 11 percent and John Liu with 3 percent.
“The competition at the moment appears to be a race between Thompson and Quinn to see who can finish second and make it to the runoff, assuming, of course, that de Blasio does not further grow his lead enough to hit the magic 40 percent [to avoid a runoff],” said Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg.
Voters said de Blasio would do the best job when it comes to keeping New Yorkers safer, making the city more affordable, creating jobs and addressing housing, the poll shows.
The new poll also shows Eliot Spitzer leads Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer 50 percent to 35 percent in the race for city comptroller. The two candidates are tied with 46 percent of support in a Quinnipiac University poll released on Thursday.
“While Stringer is running even with Spitzer in Manhattan, Spitzer leads Stringer by more than 20 points in Queens and the Bronx and has a nine-point lead in Brooklyn,” Greenberg said. “Spitzer has a slightly positive 46-41 percent favorability rating and Stringer remains largely unknown to half of the likely voters, with a 31-19 percent favorability rating.”
The New York Times/Siena College poll was conducted by telephone Aug. 19-28 from 505 likely Democratic primary voters. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
