Changes are coming to the waterfront.
During Thursday night’s State of the City speech, Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to unveil the proposal of a waterfront streetcar line that would stretch along the East River connecting Brooklyn and Queens, according to The New York Times. The idea came up after the nonprofit group called Friends of the Brooklyn Queens Connector – made up of real estate and community leaders – drafted up the proposal for the 16-mile ride, the New York Daily News reported. RELATED:Parking-by-phone coming to NYC: Mayor de Blasio According to the Daily News, de Blasio plans the $2.5 billion streetcar to take passengers from Sunset Park all the way up to Astoria.
Construction of the line is expected to begin in 2019 – after studies and community review—and service would begin around 2024, the Times reported.
The overall project, the Daily News said, would be funded from tax revenue that would be generated from higher property values alone the streetcar’s boundaries.
