Delivery man killed in shooting

A pizza delivery man had only been on the job a few days when he answered the call that would leave him shot to death outside a Dartmouth apartment complex.

Donald Chad Smith, 27, was found dead outside of 15 Joseph Young St. in Highfield Park just before 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.

He was delivering part-time for Panada Pizza, an employee at the Primrose Street restaurant confirmed yesterday. The employee, who wouldn’t give his name, said Smith began working last week.

Police responded to the apartment building after receiving reports of gunfire. They remained on scene yesterday, examining the contents of a dumpster behind the building and canvassing nearby Jason MacCullough Memorial Park with a K-9 unit. Few other details have been released.

“The motive behind this is one of the things we’re very much interested in in trying to determine. We are not sure at this point,” said police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter, adding they are investigating “all possibilities.”

An autopsy was scheduled for yesterday afternoon. The type of firearm used in the attack is not known.

A woman living at a nearby apartment said she heard a single gunshot that woke up her two-year-old child. She did not wish to be identified.

“I don’t feel safe here, not at all,” she said. “I want to get out of here. It’s just too much.”
