Before launching her own label, Romanian-born Yoana Baraschi earned her fashion keep designing for Faconable,Cacharel, Mugler and Betsey Johnson. While she was inspired at each fashion house on her resume, the designs in her owneponymous label are largely influenced by her world travels and her own unique eye for design.

Baraschi’s Spring 2015 collection consists of bold tribal and floral patterns, set against black and white. A blend of sporty and sophisticated, each piece is designed to be mixed and matched – depending on how bold you want to get. We chatted with Baraschi over breakfast and got her tips on how even the most colorphobic New Yorker can brighten up her wardrobe for spring:

Who is the Yoana Baraschi woman? Who do you design for?

I design for a woman who doesn’t like to be defined by her age or her work. She’s independent, unique, strong and bold. She likes to put things together her own way and likes to feel special when she’s getting dressed.

What tips do you have for woman who want to try wearing more colors or prints?

Wearing it with black helps. It makes it less bold, so if you aren’t used to wearing color or prints, that’s a good place to start. So if you have a blank bandeau or black mesh pants – or even just black sandals – that can help you feel less lost.

What trends are you loving right now?

I like to mix prints a lot. I also love the athletic trend. It gives a familiarity to clothes. So every time you see something mesh or color-blocked it’s going to be an easy transition to wear it.
