Destinations: 5 extreme theme parks

It’s not every person who wants to be scared out of their skin. But for some, a theme park with over-the-top attractions makes for an ideal vacation destination. From erotic sculptures to the world’s steepest roller coaster, we’ve got something for every type of thrill-seeker.

Six Flags Magic

Mountain, Los Angeles

This record-breaking theme park really wants to test your fear threshold: It claims to offer more roller coasters than any other park in the world.

Star ride: The Riddler’s Revenge is the world’s tallest and fastest stand-up roller coaster. Don’t let your legs buckle under as you do a full body loop six times over.

Crocosaurus Cove

Darwin, Australia

Welcome to the world of the saltwater crocodile, locally known as “salties.” Cuddle a baby croc or attend the daily Barramundi fish feeding.

Star ride: The transparent Cage of Death allows you to be fully immersed in a crocodile pen for 15 minutes. If this is too much to handle, you can just swim in a separate pool that runs alongside the crocodile enclosure.

Fuji Q Highland

Fujiyoshida, Japan

Set near the base of the picturesque Mount Fuji, there are rides to suit all tastes, including the eerie walk-through ‘Haunted Hospital.’

Star ride: Takabisha currently stands as the world’s steepest vertical-drop roller coaster. The ride takes you through seven palpitating twists and a 43-meter drop in just 112 seconds.

Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi,

United Arab Emirates

The world’s only Ferrari-themed park is just as it should be: over-the-top, exclusive and supercool.

Star ride: Go with the wind on the Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest coaster. Sit inside the Ferrari F1 carriage, and within the space of two seconds you will experience a speed increase of 0-100 km/h, accelerating to 240 km/h with the g-force to back it up.

Love Land, Korea Jeju

Island, South Korea

What started off as an art project became a cheeky and daring attraction considering it wasn’t so long ago that kissing on TV was taboo here and police would measure the length of women’s skirts.

Star ride: More than 100 sculptures representing sex organs and positions lie beyond the parted legs framing the entrance.
