Development eyed for Squamish lands

A large residential and commercial development is planned for the lands around the south end of the Burrard Street Bridge.

A spokesperson for the Squamish Nation, which owns the lands, said it’ll take about one year before details are announced.

“We are just in the planning stages … looking at both residential and commercial,” said Chief Gibby Jacob of the site adjacent to the Molson Brewery.

No approval is needed from the City of Vancouver because the Squamish Nation has its own zoning authority.

“We have to go back to citizens of our nation to lay out what we are proposing to get their approval,” said Jacob.

He added that the proposed condo units would be available for sale or rental to anyone interested.

“We will double our (3,600 Squamish Nation) population in the next 20 to 25 years … One of our biggest needs is housing.”
