Downtown cab stands to offer late-night rides

Bar-goers may have an easier time finding a late-night ride home from downtown with the city launching a new pilot project.

After surveying hundreds of Calgarians, Lorna Wallace, project manager for the initiative, said the biggest issue that arose was access to taxis.

“There’s two goals: Safety and convenience for patrons and drivers,” said Wallace, explaining cabs will queue up outside establishments at designated stands.

“If this works well and works for citizens on the safety and convenience, definitely we would look at options for the next phase.”

Kurt Enders, vice-president of Checker Transportation, said the project may take some time for drivers to get used to, but it will benefit everyone in the long run.

“It’s going to make it much easier for the drivers to know where the customers are,” said Enders. “It’s a much safer loading and unloading area.”

Wayne Leong, owner of Melrose Café and Bar, said this is something patrons have been asking for for a long time.
