Dozens homeless after fires

Fires wreaked havoc on the capital region over the weekend, resulting in dozens left homeless, devastating property damages and injuries.

Residents of a Leduc apartment building were ripped from their suites Friday night, after an inferno sparked in a 22-year-old woman’s unit sent her running from the complex, her hair completely engulfed in flames.

Damages are estimated at $4 million, and the cause is still under investigation. As a result, 36 people are left homeless.

“It’s devastating,” said Leduc RCMP Const. Jodi Heidinger. “All those poor people that are homeless now — a lot are seniors and young couples.”
