Driver ‘devastated’ after city bus fatally strikes pedestrian

Police and city transit are investigating after a city bus struck a woman crossing the street on her way to work downtown.

The pedestrian, who police said was in her early 20s, later died of her injuries.

The fatal crash happened at 6:50 a.m. in a marked crosswalk on 97 Street at 102A Avenue, kitty corner to the law courts, said EPS spokesperson Clair Seyler.

“It’s still under investigation as to which way the pedestrian was crossing,” said Seyler.

Firefighters had to remove the woman from under the bus and EMS transported the woman to hospital with serious injuries, where she later died, said Seyler.

The driver is “devastated” and counselling services have been offered to the Edmonton Transit employee, who passed a sobriety test, said Seyler.

Several people who did not want to be identified but said they knew the victim, were seen leaving the scene this morning in tears just after 8 a.m.

EPS is reviewing video from area buildings and speaking to witnesses who might be able to provide more clues as to what caused the fatal crash. Blood was visible on the asphalt under the bus hours later and police tape cordoned off the area, slowing morning traffic.

It’s not known whether sun played a role in the collision, which happened when the bus turned onto 97 Street from a turning lane while the walk signal was flashing.

“That’s something that will be investigated,” said Seyler.
