Driver fails to stop after hitting child

Neighbours are stumped as to how a well-cared-for Mississauga toddler could wander out of his house in the middle of the night before being struck by a passing car that kept on going.

Just before 1 a.m. yesterday morning the three-year-old left his townhouse and wandered through an open gate. The boy was hit on Britannia Road just west of Glen Erin.

The car did not stop, but with the help of witnesses the driver was found a short distance away, police said. A 48-year-old Mississauga man was arrested.

The boy is in critical condition at hospital.
