Driver in toll booth crash charged by police

Police have laid charges against the driver of a five-tonne truck that crashed into a Cobequid Pass toll booth on Monday.

Walter Gregory Pennington of Loganville, Georgia, has been charged under the province’s Motor Vehicle Act with failing to drive a motor vehicle in a careful and prudent manner.

“We determined this was the most appropriate action given the evidence and we truly believe from our investigation he fell asleep,” said Sgt. Al Affleck, with the Colchester District RCMP.

Around 11 a.m. on April 20, the 54-year-old truck driver slammed into a toll booth, pinning the commissionaire inside the small crumpled concrete structure for about 40 minutes. The crash also injured an on-site construction worker.
